The Congressman from Georgia’s first Congressional district says he will vie for the opportunity to challenge incumbent Senator Jon Ossoff in 2026.
Carter, a Republican, announced Thursday that that he will seek the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in 2026. The announcement comes two days after Governor Brian Kemp said he will not run.
Carter was first elected to Congress in 2015. He served in the Georgia legislature prior to that, serving as a state representative from 2005 to 2009 and a state senator from 2009 to 2014. Carter’s political experience dates back even further to when he served on the Pooler City Council from 1994 to 1995 and then as the city’s mayor from 1996 to 2004.
He hails from coastal Georgia and calls Chatham County ‘home.’ In the private sector, Carter worked as a pharmacist and has owned several independent pharmacies himself. When he was in the Georgia Senate and still owner of three pharmacies, he sponsored Senate Bill 408 which would have increased reimbursement rates for pharmacies.
More recently, Carter introduced a H.R. 1161, which would authorize Donald Trump to acquire Greenland and rename it “Red, White, and Blueland.
