This is a press release from the Raffensperger for Governor campaign.
Conservative businessman and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger called on the Georgia General Assembly to require REAL ID to cast a ballot in state elections, reinforcing Georgia’s position as a national leader in election security.
“Our state has set the standard for election integrity through strong voter ID laws, accurate voter rolls, and transparent post-election audits,” said Raffensperger. “We have defended voter ID requirements, citizenship verification, and list maintenance, including standing up to pressure from Stacey Abrams and national activist groups, because these common sense policies are lawful and backed by Georgia voters.”
“As technology and threats evolve, so must our safeguards,” Raffensperger said. “REAL ID is the gold standard for identification in America today. If it is required to board an airplane or enter a federal building, it should also be required to choose our leaders at the local, state, and federal level.”
REAL ID is a federal identification standard established by Congress through the REAL ID Act of 2005 in response to the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations. The law sets higher security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards.
“Georgia’s election system is secure. Let’s keep it that way,” Raffensperger added. “I urge the Georgia House and Senate to pass legislation requiring REAL ID for voting. REAL ID protects lawful voters, reinforces trust in election outcomes, and ensures Georgia elections remain the best in America.”
