Georgia Lawmakers to Study Disposal of Cannabis Waste

A study committee created by legislation passed by the Georgia General Assembly will study disposal and recycling of cannabis in Georgia.

This study committee was created during the 2022 legislative session by House Resolution 798 based on the knowledge that manufacturing products from hemp, CBD oil and products, medical products, and various derivatives, extracts, cannabinoids, isomers, acids, salts, and salts of isomers can create considerable volumes of waste. The study committee resolution states that the volumes of waste “can cause complications to traditional waste disposal,” but if captured and treated properly, can be valuable and reusable for other purposes.

Moreover, other states and private industry are already exploring the uses and value of waste from Cannabis sativa L. products, including for uses in producing renewable energy, manufacturing, and composting. As such, the bipartisan effort to study Cannabis was proposed and approved.

Last week, Speaker Jan Jones (R-Milton), 74th Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives, announced the appointment of the following members of the House Study Committee on Cannabis Waste Disposal and Recycling:

  • Rep. Mesha Mainor (D-Atlanta) – Chair
  • Rep. John Corbett (R-Lake Park) – Corbett, in 2019, authored the state’s tremendously restrictive hemp legislation. He is chairman of the House Agriculture & Consumer Affairs Committee.
  • Rep. Mack Jackson (D-Sandersville)
  • Rep. Alan Powell (R-Hartwell)
  • Rep. Dale Washburn (R-Macon)

According to the press release from the House of Representatives published on December 2, the committee was formally abolished on December 1, 2022, one day before the release.
