Julia Basquin of Statesboro High School has been named a 2023 Georgia Scholar.
Basquin, Statesboro High’s STAR student, is one of 154 graduating seniors who were selected by the Georgia Department of Education. State School Superintendent Richard Woods announced the honorees on March 27.
“These seniors worked hard, became leaders in their schools and communities, and took advantage of the opportunities offered in Georgia public schools,” Woods said in a press release issued by the state. “I wish them continued success as they embark on their futures.”
Georgia Scholars are high school seniors who have achieved excellence in school and community life. While the program does not provide scholarship funds to recipients, they each will receive a special seal on their diplomas and the privilege of adding this academic honor to their resumes as they plan their post-secondary journeys.
The Georgia Scholar program is coordinated by the Georgia Department of Education in partnership with local school districts and schools. Georgia Scholars must meet eight specific criteria:
(1) achieve 22 carnegie course units, 17 of which are in core academic subjects;
(2) achieve a minimum combined score of 1360 on the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) at one test sitting or a composite score of 31 at one test sitting on the American College Test (ACT);
(3) have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.75;
(4) be at least 18 years of age by March 1, and be registered to vote;
(5) show evidence of self-esteem and concern for others in day-to-day activities;
(6) have participated in at least three different competitive interscholastic activities;
(7) have been appointed by a school official, or elected to, positions of leadership in a minimum of two different organizations sponsored by the school; and
(8) have shown evidence of leadership in a minimum of two different organizations outside the school.
