Just before 6:00 p.m. on May 29, police officers and EMS were dispatched to an apartment in The Hamptons on Rucker Lane in Statesboro. According to the callers, a four-year-old male child at that location had suffered a gunshot wound.

Upon arriving officers immediately rendered aid to the child before turning him over to Bulloch EMS for transport to East Georgia Regional Medical Center. Sadly, despite all possible medical assistance, the child passed away at EGRMC. An autopsy at the GBI’s Coastal Crime Lab is pending.

Detectives secured a search warrant for the apartment and conducted multiple interviews with then occupants of the apartment and with family members of the child.

While the investigation is still ongoing, the evidence suggests that the child was able to access an unsecured firearm and discharge it, fatally injuring himself. At the conclusion of the investigation, the case file will be turned over to the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit’s District Attorney’s Office for review.

Anyone with information on this case should contact Senior Detective Eric Short at 912-764-9911.
