One man has been arrested following a fatal head-on collision.
Deputies with the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit responded to a head-on collision on Old Augusta Road South shortly after 5 p.m. Friday.
Preliminary information indicates a Ford Escape being driven by 27-year-old Deiby Janamejoy Jansasoy was headed north when it crossed over the center line and struck a Chevy Silverado driven by 47-year-old Michael Sharpe.
Sharpe was entrapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by fire personnel. Sharpe was transported to the hospital but died from his injuries upon arrival.
Jansasoy was also transported to the hospital but attempted to leave prior to being discharged, presumably due to being wanted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation.
Due to this behavior and inherent flight risk due to attempting to leave, Jansasoy was immediately arrested and taken to the Effingham County Jail.
Jansasoy was charged with Homicide by Vehicle in the First Degree, Reckless Driving, DUI, Failure to Maintain Lane, and Driving While Unlicensed.
Since Jansasoy was arrested prior to the investigation being completed, charges may be amended or added as the investigation progresses.
This is a press release from the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office.
