Chavers Elected President of Georgia Municipal Association’s District 12

Paulette Chavers, District Two Councilmember of the Statesboro City Council, has been elected as President of the Georgia Municipal Association’s (GMA) District 12 for the 2025–2026 term.

The Georgia Municipal Association lists itself as a “voluntary nonprofit organization” to 537 member cities. The organization is also a lobbying entity which advocates for city-related issues on a regional and statewide basis. The organization, funded in large part by tax dollars used for ‘dues’ to be a member of the organization, also provides resources and training to elected and appointed officials who serve at the city level.

“We are honored to have Councilmember Chavers serve in this leadership capacity,” said Larry Hanson, CEO and Executive Director of GMA. “She brings a wealth of experience, dedication, and insight that will benefit the municipalities of District 12 and the entire GMA organization.”

As District 12 President, Chavers will serve as a liaison between GMA and local municipal officials in the district. Responsibilities include assisting in the implementation of GMA policies, advocating on behalf of cities, and supporting efforts to strengthen local governance through training and networking.

District 12 covers the southeastern coastal region of Georgia for cities in the following counties: Bryan, Bulloch, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long, McIntosh, and Screven.

The 66-member board consists of active city officials, primarily mayors and councilmembers, from across the state. Seats are also designated for the presidents of the Georgia City-County Management Association, the Georgia Municipal Clerks Association, and the GMA City Attorneys Sections, as well as the chair of the Georgia Municipal Employees Benefit System Board of Trustees.

GMA’s Board of Directors provides general oversight and guidance to the 537-member organization, adopts governance policies and advocates for cities’ legislative interests at the state and federal levels
