(The Center Square) – Georgia Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Jackson said he will match the $1,000 Trump accounts for Georgia children if elected.
Jackson joined second-term Republican President Donald Trump on stage at Cobb County’s Wheeler High School, where the president spoke on the accounts. American families with children born between Jan. 1, 2025, and Dec. 31, 2028, can claim a $1,000 Trump account, according to the White House. They can add up to $5,000 to the account.
“And I believe our Legislature will approve that, but if they don’t, I will personally donate it myself,” Jackson said.
Trump backed Jackson’s opponent, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, in the primary election and said Tuesday he was a “big fan of the other side, too,” in an apparent reference to Jones.
Trump endorsed a long list of Republican candidates during his hour-long speech, including Mike Collins, who is challenging U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff in the U.S. Senate race. He also endorsed state Sen. Greg Dolezal for lieutenant governor; Houston Gaines in the 9th Congressional District; Tim Fleming for secretary of state; Brian Strickland for attorney general.
“We have some great candidates running,” Trump said. “They’ve got to win by a lot, otherwise we’re going communist. I don’t think anybody wants that.”
Trump also brought Mike Plant, president and CEO of the Atlanta Braves Development Company, and former Braves manager Brian Snitker to the stage. Plant and Snitker had earlier presented the president with a 250th anniversary Fourth of July jersey that the Braves wore over the holiday weekend.
