The City of Reidsville announced Tuesday that the city plans to request review by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation into financial irregularities recently discovered across four fiscal years.
In a statement released by Mayor Vickie Nail on Tuesday, she said the following:
In keeping with my commitment to transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship of the public resource, I am announced that information has recently come to my attention concerning potential financial irregularities and possible mismanagement of funds within the City during FY 2021 -2024.
Because of the seriousness of these concerns, I am formally requesting that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation review the information.
At this time, it is important to emphasis that the request is being made to ensure that the facts are reviewed thoroughly, independently, and professionally. Protecting the integrity of our local government and maintaining the trust of our citizens must remain our highest priority.
As this matter is now being referred for review, I will not speculate or comment further on specific details while the appropriate authorities examine the information. The city will fully cooperate with any inquiry and will continue conducting business in service to our community.
I remain committed to honesty, accountability, and ensuring that the public’s confidence in its government is protected.
Under Georgia law, a mayor does not have the authority to request assistance from the GBI. Such a request must come from a police chief, a sheriff, a district attorney, or a superior court judge. TheGeorgiaVirtue inquired as to who formally made the request. City Attorney DuAnn Davis confirmed Tuesday that the chief of police contacted GBI’s Region 5 office in Statesboro.
