The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Tyrone Oliver recently announced the promotion of Gail Oliphant, Deputy Director of the Compliance Unit, to Director of the Compliance Unit, effective August 1, 2026. Oliphant will provide leadership and oversight for American Correctional Association (ACA) Accreditation, Internal Audits, PREA, and Policy Administration, ensuring the organization continues to uphold the highest standards of accountability, compliance, professionalism, and operational excellence.
“Gail has gained a wealth of correctional knowledge in each position she has held with the agency during her twenty-six-year tenure,” said Commissioner Tyrone Oliver. “We are confident that under her leadership, the Compliance Unit team will continue to maintain high standards in developing and implementing best practices for our correctional facilities.”
Oliphant began her career with the department in 2000 as a Correctional Officer at Washington State Prison (SP), where she rose through the ranks of Sergeant and Lieutenant. In 2015, she transferred to Emanuel Women’s Facility as a Behavioral Health Counselor II, and in 2016, she was promoted to Unit Manager. In 2018, she was promoted to Correctional Senior Manager in the Compliance Unit and later that year she transferred to Augusta State Medical Prison as a Unit Manager. In 2022, she returned to the Compliance Unit as a Correctional Senior Manager, and in 2025, she was promoted to Deputy Director of the Compliance Unit, where she currently serves.
Oliphant holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from Ashford University and she completed the Certified Public Manager Program at the University of Georgia. Her departmental training consists Basic Correctional Officer Training, Basic Management Training, Sergeant’s Academy, and POST Instructor Training.
