13th Annual Reggie Dawson Math Tournament

The legacy of a former math teacher lives on as elementary school students competed in the 13th Annual Reggie Dawson Memorial Math Tournament on Saturday, March 23, in Statesboro High School’s Lee Hill Arena.

The Reginald Dawson Memorial Math Tournament is an academic competition for third and fourth-grade students who compete both individually and as part of third-grade and fourth-grade school teams. More than 200 students from eight of Bulloch County Schools’ nine elementary schools plus the community’s largest private school, Bulloch Academy, participated in the individual computation and team ciphering skills, where schools can enter multiple teams.

Since its start in 2012, the tournament has encouraged the development of math skills and prepares students for future competitions like the Penny Sikes Tournament for fifth and sixth-graders and the Georgia Southern University Tournament for middle and high school students.

The Reggie Dawson Memorial Math Tournament was named for a former Statesboro High School educator whose life and career were cut tragically short when he lost his battle with cancer in 2010. Local math teachers wanted to honor his memory and the excellent example he set for team work and academic excellence by naming the tournament in his memory. These are this year’s winners:
