Free summer meals for any children in June

Two ways to participate: Weekly Meal Box Pick Up or On-Site Dining

In June Bulloch County Schools will provide free meals to any children ages 18 and younger as part of its annual Summer Meals Program.

The school district is an equal opportunity provider, so the program is open to all children regardless of income, school enrollment, or residency. These meals are made possible through federal and state school nutrition funding to ensure all children have access to healthy meals during the summer months when school is out.

This year there are flexible options for families. They may choose to pick up a weekly box of meal supplies to easily prepare meals for children where they live or bring children to a school to eat prepared meals.

Weekly Meal Supplies Pick on Four Mondays in June
On four Mondays in June the school district will have four drive-thru distribution sites where families may pick up a box of food supplies. Most items are not ready to eat and require some simple preparation at home. Families may receive one box per child. Each box includes food supplies for seven days’ worth of breakfasts and lunches. The boxes will also include important information about food safety, food preparation and meal menus. Families are encouraged to have their children with them at pick up, but if they do not, they should allow enough time to complete a simple state-required household verification form on which they will list each child’s name.

  • Pick-up dates: June 1, 8, 15, and 22, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, or while supplies last.
  • Drive-Thru Pick-Up Sites:
    • Statesboro High School, located at 10 Coach Lee Hill Boulevard in Statesboro
    • Stilson Elementary School, located at 15569 State Route 119C in Brooklet

    • Portal Middle High School, located at 27245 U.S. Highway 80 West in Portal

Dine-In Meal Service at a School Three Days a Week from June 2 – 25     For the dine-in meal option, children may come and enjoy breakfast, lunch, or both on scheduled days and times at Mattie Lively Elementary School, located at 204 Debbie Dr, in Statesboro.

Since children will be present, no forms or registration are required to participate. All food must be eaten on site.

Children can be accompanied by a parent, family member, or a caregiver. Older children may enter independently. Children who are enrolled in Bulloch County Schools’ summer learning programs at Mattie Lively Elementary will receive free meals at this location as well.

  • Dine in Meal Service Days: Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays (June 2 through June 25)
  • Public Meal Service Times for the Community: Breakfastfrom 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and lunch from 12 noon to 1 p.m.
  • Summer Learning Program Student Meal Times: Breakfast is from 7:45 a.m. to 8:10 a.m. and lunch is from 11 a.m. to 11:25 a.m.

Why Are Summer Meals Important?

Food insecurity is a concern for children in Bulloch County throughout the year, but especially when schools are closed for the summer.

  • More than 78.48% of students enrolled in the school district qualify for free and reduced-price meals.
  • Twelve of the school district’s 15 schools qualify for the United States Department of Agriculture Community Eligibility Provision program which allows the nation’s highest poverty schools, who have a high percentage of students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals, to serve breakfast and lunch at no cost to all enrolled students at those schools without collecting Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications.
  • During the 2025-2026 school year Bulloch County Schools served 358 children who were identified as homeless based on the federal government’s McKinney Vento Act definition of lacking a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.
  • In the 2025-2026 school year, 87% of students were identified as economically disadvantaged.
