(The Center Square) – President Donald Trump’s planned visit to Georgia on Thursday is taking place as voters in the 14th U.S. House District cast early ballots in a crowded race.
The president confirmed his visit to Rome during a press gaggle on Monday.
“We have a lot of people who want to take Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Greene’s place and many, many, candidates and I have to choose one,” Trump said, referring to Greene by a nickname he gave the former congresswoman. “They say that whoever I endorse is going to win and we have a lot of good candidates who want to take her place.”
The details of Trump’s visit had not been announced as of Tuesday morning.
Trump endorsed Clay Fuller, the district attorney for the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit. Fuller told The Center Square in an interview that the endorsement was the honor of a lifetime.
“No one has worked worked for the Trump administration previously,” Fuller said. “I was an appointee in the first Trump administration working mostly on national security issues like special operations oversight so I think my background really stands out against the rest.”
Eighteen candidates are vying for the job. The March 10 election includes all candidates, regardless of party. Besides Fuller, Republicans Star Black, Regan Box, Beau Brown, Jared Craig, Eric Cunningham, Tom Gray, Trey Kelly, Colton Moore, Brian Stover, Meg Strickland, James Tulley and Jenna Turnipseed are on the ballot. Jim Davis, Shawn Harris and Jonathan Hobbs are Democrats. Andrew Underwood is running as a Libertarian. Rob “Rush” Ruszkowski is an independent candidate.
Early voting began Monday. The 14th Congressional District includes Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Floyd, Murray, Paulding, Polk, Walker and Whitfield counties, and portions of Cobb County.
The 14th is solid Republican, according to the Cook Political Report. Harris, who challenged Greene in the 2024 election, received 35% of the vote.
Georgia law requires a 50% majority plus one vote to win a race, setting up a likely runoff on April 14.
