Burke County Sheriff Alfonzo Williams has been indicted by a federal grand jury.
The news was first reported by Will Rioux of WRDW. On Tuesday, he reported the indictment was returned in by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Georgia in Augusta.
Williams faces six counts including Hobbs Act Extortions Under Color of Official Right and Transfer of a Firearm to a Prohibited Person.
Williams, the indictment alleges, requested and accepted money from five different people in exchange for dismissing their pending DUI citations in Burke County. He also reportedly transferred a Glock pistol to a convicted felon.
