Effingham County Receives Donation of AKC Pet Disaster Relief Trailer

AKC Reunite, a non-profit pet identification and recovery service provider in the United States, announced Thursday that Effingham County is the 109th recipient of one of its AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailer.

This life-saving equipment will be available to dispatch to any local disaster scene that needs assistance sheltering pets. This trailer was delivered on January 25th and will assist Effingham County Board of Commissioners & Animal Shelter in helping community pets that may become displaced in an emergency.

“Thanks to the continued support of the Savannah Kennel Club, this is now the second trailer donated to support the area” said Tom Sharp, President & CEO of AKC Reunite. “With the yearly threat of hurricanes and flooding, we are sure this equipment will save lives.”

AKC Pet Disaster Relief is a nationwide program sponsored by AKC Reunite, the country’s largest non-profit microchip identification and recovery service. AKC Reunite partners with AKC® Dog Clubs and pet lovers across the country to make these donations a reality. The Effingham County trailer was made possible by the Savannah Kennel Club.

“The Effingham Shelter staff is extremely grateful to the AKC and Savannah Kennel club for this generous donation. There really are no words to express the gratitude,” said Lorna Shelton, Director of Effingham County Animal Shelter. “Everything has been thought of that we would need in the event we have to use the Disaster trailer. We have peace of mind knowing that we don’t have to worry about helping our citizens in a crisis.”

The equipment in the AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailers helps to create a safe, temporary home-base for at least 65 pets during the first 72 hours after a disaster is declared. The trailers house and deliver essential animal care items including crates and carriers, AKC Reunite microchips and an AKC Reunite universal microchip scanner, bowls, collars and leashes as well as fans, lighting and a generator, cleaning supplies and maintenance items. These supplies can be used as co-location shelters, where people can evacuate with their pets, as well as emergency animal shelters for displaced animals.

“The Savannah Kennel Club, with the help of the community, is proud to present the AKC Disaster Relief Trailer to Effingham County,” said Donna Merkle of the Savannah Kennel Club. “This is the second disaster relief trailer we have provided to a local shelter in our area. It is also only the second disaster relief trailer near the Georgia Coast. These trailers not only have life-saving capabilities, in case of a natural disaster in our area, but reunite much beloved pets with their families.”
