A former Bryan County Middle School* teacher has been indicted on two felony charges, including Child Molestation.
66-year-old Rory J. Mooney was indicted by a grand jury for an incident alleged to have occurred while Mooney was employed by the Bryan County Board of Education as a sixth grade teacher.
A special presentment to the grand jury in Bryan County on June 8 resulted in a True Bill of Indictment on one count of Child Molestation and one count of Making a False Statement.
According to the indictment, Mooney masturbated in the presence of a child under the age of sixteen in November 2025. Mooney is also accused of making a false statement to the Human Resources Director and the Principal at Richmond Hill Middle School when they were investigating whether Mooney engaged in sexually inappropriate behavior in the classroom when students were present. The indictment states that Mooney ‘did falsely deny having masturbated anywhere on the premises of the Bryan County Middle School” during an interview in October 2025.
*As a point of clarification, Mooney was reportedly a teacher at Richmond Hill MS, but the allegation as laid out in the indictment is that he made a false statement during an investigation into whether he had masturbated on the premises of Bryan County Middle School.
Based on the indictment, the allegation of Child Molestation occurred after the alleged false statement was made during an investigation.
Following the indictment, a grand jury bench warrant was issued for Mooney.
Mooney was terminated amid the investigation, but parents expressed outrage on social media this week, noting that they were never told why Mooney left mid-school year.
Court documents indicate that Mooney is scheduled for arraignment and a bond hearing before Judge Robert Russell in July. He is represented by Savannah attorney John Carson.
*Another news outlet [News Now Georgia] reported Thursday that the case involved a ‘Richmond Hill Middle School’ teacher. This outlet initially reported that it was Bryan County Middle School. That statement was based on the naming of Bryan County Middle School in the indictment as filed by the District Attorney’s Office in the Clerk of Superior Court.
NNG also reported that the case was investigated by the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office. The indictment does not reflect that. The incident is alleged to have occurred in Bryan County and the arresting agency is listed as the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office.
