Ossoff & Warnock on Nomination of U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia

Georgia U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Raphael Warnock released the following statements after President Joe Biden’s nomination of Ryan K. Buchanan to serve as United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia.

“I am pleased that President Biden has accepted my and Sen. Rev. Warnock’s recommendation for this key federal law enforcement position. I expect and am confident that Mr. Buchanan will perform his duties with impartiality and professionalism, guided by commitments to truth, integrity, and justice. I look forward to meeting with him again ahead of the confirmation process and seeing him before the Senate Judiciary Committee soon,” Sen. Ossoff said.

“Ryan Buchanan’s extensive experience as a federal prosecutor makes him a stellar nominee for this important post. Mr. Buchanan has dealt with everything from organized crime to foreign terrorist organizations over the course of his accomplished career, and few people in our state can match the scope of his legal expertise in securing justice and keeping Americans safe,” Senator Warnock said. “I was glad to join Senator Ossoff in recommending Mr. Buchanan for this crucial position, and President Biden made an excellent choice. I look forward to supporting Mr. Buchanan’s confirmation process.”

In March, Sens. Ossoff and Warnock formed a historic Federal Nominations Advisory Commission to review applicants for open Federal judicial, U.S. Attorney, and U.S. Marshall positions in Georgia. The 2021 Commission is composed of a diverse group of attorneys, judges, civil rights leaders, and criminal justice reform advocates, all of whom bring a wide array of experience to advise the Senators. The 2021 Commission was led by Judge Leah Ward Sears, the former Chief Justice of Georgia’s Supreme Court and the first African American female Supreme Court Chief Justice in the country.

Ryan Buchanan is an Assistant United States Attorney in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, where he has served since 2013. Mr. Buchanan has served as the Deputy Chief of the Violent Crime and National Security Section since 2018 and as National Security and Anti-Terrorism Advisory Council Coordinator since 2017. Mr. Buchanan previously served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama from 2010 to 2013.

From 2006 to 2010, Mr. Buchanan was an associate at the law firm McGuireWoods LLP, in Charlotte and Atlanta, where he focused on labor and employment litigation. Mr. Buchanan served as a law clerk for Judge Inge P. Johnson on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama from 2005 to 2006. Mr. Buchanan received his J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School in 2005 and his B.S. from Samford University in 2001.

In September, President Biden accepted Sens. Ossoff and Warnock’s recommendations and nominated Victoria Marie Calvert and Sarah Elisabeth Geraghty to each serve on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. Calvert would become the second Black female judge for the Northern District of Georgia and the first former federal public defender to become a district court judge in Georgia. Geraghty would become the first civil rights attorney to become a district court judge in Georgia.

This is a press release.
