Salomatin Named EGRMC’s First DAISY Award of 2024

Nida Salomatin, RN, was honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses at East Georgia Regional Medical Center.

A nurse within the critical care unit and at EGRMC for almost one year, Nida received nominations from her colleagues for the award. In fact, Nida came to EGRMC from the Chicago area with several DAISY pin nominations but this is her first official DAISY award.

A colleague stated, “She is a joy to work with. She is compassionate and knowledgeable and someone I look forward to working with each time I see her name on the shift board. She is an asset to critical care and we are lucky to have her.”

Another team member described one of the many moments she witnessed Nida’s compassionate care, ”Nida came to work one day and was given the sickest patient on the unit with two other critical patients. She immediately saw the patient and where their care plan was heading. To witness this dedicated, compassionate care first hand was rare. Nida went into the room and spoke to the spouse with such care and empathy. She could see that all that could have been done had already been done, except for the spouse to say their final goodbyes. Nida closed the curtain, cried with the spouse that she only met just 10 minutes prior. Nida gave her patient and their spouse a final moment together they may not have gotten.

When presented with the DAISY award Nida stated, “I try to go above and beyond to give kindness because it’s free to give!”

“Nida exemplifies kindness and compassion, embodying the ideal nurse we all wish for as patients,” stated Marie Burdett, MSN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. “Her dedication merits this recognition, and we are privileged to have her on our team.”

Nurses may be nominated for the DAISY Award by patients, family members, and colleagues. The award recipient is chosen by a committee at EGRMC.

“We are honored to be part of The DAISY Award program,” said Stephen Pennington, CEO of East Georgia Regional Medical Center. “Nurses are everyday heroes, and it’s crucial that they understand the immense value of their work. The DAISY Foundation offers another avenue for us to convey our appreciation. We are delighted to recognize Nida with this award and express our gratitude for the compassionate care she consistently provides to all her patients at EGRMC.”

The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization, established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, an auto-immune disease. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
