Burke County Man Arrested for Double Homicide in Millen

A Burke County man has been arrested for a double homicide in Millen.

It happened over the weekend. At the request of the Millen Police Department, GBI agents were called in to investigate the death of Tyrell Brown, age 28, of Garfield, Georgia and Maxine Jones, age 48, of Millen, Georgia.

The investigation showed that on March 24, 2024, at about 1:45 a.m., the Millen Police Department responded to the Annie P. Chance Veteran’s Center located on Acorn Avenue, Millen, Georgia in reference to a shooting. Law enforcement arrived on scene and found Brown with a gunshot wound and Jones with no immediate signs of trauma. Brown and Jones were pronounced dead at the scene.

At about 7:10 a.m., another shooting incident occurred on Wasdin Street which appeared to be connected to the first incident. No victims were injured during this shooting.

The bodies of Brown and Jones were taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Pooler, Georgia, where, upon further examination, Jones was also discovered to have suffered a gunshot wound.

The GBI said Monday that agents had charged Raheem Whitfield, age 28, of Waynesboro, Burke County, Georgia, with Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime in connection to the deaths of Brown and Jones. Whitfield turned himself in and is currently booked at the Jenkins County Jail.

This case is active and ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Millen Police Department at 478-982-2750 or the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Statesboro at 912-871-1121.

Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
