Prosecutors were victorious in a trial of a woman charged with committing an act of violence against an Effingham County Sheriff’s Deputy.
According to the Indictment, Kacie Lyn Burton was charged with felony Obstruction of a Law Enforcement Officer on June 4, 2024 when she kicked a deputy with the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office.
Burton was also charged as a recidivist due to previous convictions in Effingham County, both of which were drug-related.
In 2019, she pleaded guilty to Possession Alprazolam, DUI Drugs, Drugs not in the original container, Possession of a Drug Related Object, Failure to Carry a License, and Failure to Maintain Lane. In that case, Superior Court Judge Michael Muldrew sentenced her to serve three years on probation and to pay a $1,000 fine, obtain an Alcohol & Drug Evaluation, and perform 90 hours of community service.
In 2021, Burton was indicted for unlawfully possessing Buprenorphine Hydrochloride, which is used to treat opioid dependence, and Possession of Drug Related Objects for having a pipe with methamphetamine residue in it. She entered a guilty plea in April 2023. Judge Muldrew sentenced her to serve four years on probation and pay a $2,000 fine. The following year, Burton violated her probation with her June 2024 arrest and was re-sentenced to serve 90-120 days in a Probation Detention Center.
The now -39-year-old requested a jury trial for the 2024 case and was tried in Effingham County this week, once again in the courtroom of Judge Michael Muldrew. The trial lasted less than a full day and the jury returned a guilty verdict on the sole felony count of Obstruction of a Law Enforcement Officer.
Muldrew sentenced Burton, who was represented by attorney Daveniya Fisher, to serve five years on probation with 180 days to serve in a Probation Detention Center.
