Georgia Department of Revenue Now Processing Individual Income Tax Returns

The Georgia Department of Revenue began processing 2024 individual income tax returns on Monday, February 3, 2025.

The deadline to file 2024 individual income tax returns, without an extension, is May 1, 2025.  This date is extended due to Hurricane Relief Measures following Hurricane Helene in October 2024.

“The Department of Revenue is committed to processing income tax returns in a timely manner, maintaining the highest levels of security to protect confidential taxpayer information, and guarding state tax dollars against fraud,” said State Revenue Commissioner Frank O’Connell.

In 2024, the Department processed over 5.4 million individual income tax returns with an average processing time of just over 2 days for an electronically filed, error-free return.

Reminders for Individual Income Tax Filers

  • Most error-free, electronically filed returns are processed within 5 business days of receiving the return and most refunds are issued within 21 days from the date a taxpayer files their return.
  • All first-time Georgia income tax filers, or taxpayers who have not filed in Georgia for at least five years, will receive their refund in the form of a paper check.
