Barnard Retires from Parole Board After 14 Years

Terry Barnard has retired from state government with his term completion on the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Parole.

Barnard was appointed to two seven-year terms on the parole board with the second term ending December 31, 2024. Barnard was first appointed to fill an unexpired term in 2010 and for a full term in January 2011. He was appointed again by Governor Nathan Deal in 2017.

Barnard, a former state legislator, served nearly sixteen years as a state representative before his appointment to the parole board. During his time under the Gold Dome, Barnard guided through the Georgia House the framework for the State Sex Offender Registry and Sexual Offender Registration Review Board.

He was also the second longest serving chairman in the agency’s 81 year history, serving nine years as chairman.

Agency employees and colleagues gathered in January to celebrate Barnard’s career in state government.

  1. I worked for the GA SBPP from 11/2/94-01/15/14, when the parole officers were merged with probation officers, creating the GA Dept. Of Community Supervision.
